Sign outside Cole Harbour Place welcoming girls and boys to register for Cole Harbour hockey

Yesterday I went to the library at Cole Harbour Place and as I was pulling into the parking lot I saw this sign that made me very happy. It is for hockey registration and it says girls and boys welcome. Cole Harbour Bel Ayr Minor Hockey is the association my brothers (I have two younger brothers) and I played for when we were younger. I do not know too much about this organization right now but I do know they have some all-female teams when the numbers support them. It is my understanding, however, that even when there are all-female teams offered at a certain level, female players may choose to play on a mixed team and are not forced to play on the all-female team. Go Wings Go!

After finding some books to read I noticed that the Cole Harbour High School Cavaliers football team was practicing. I played soccer for the Cavaliers in high school. I watched a little bit because my youngest daughter's assistant soccer coach told me she was going to try out for the team this year. She is in grade 11 this year and told me she had wanted to try out last year but never did. It took me a while to find her but I did and she looked great. I am not sure if any girls have ever played high school football in the Halifax Metro area before but here's to Stacy for going for it this year!

Although we still have more hurdles to jump, Halifax Regional Municipality continues to make giant strides towards equality in sport between female and male athletes.
